Iron Man 3, the latest superhero movie from Marvel, dominated the weekend box office, taking in $US 72.5 million.
It was the fourth-highest second weekend ever, behind only The Avengers, Avatar and The Dark Knight, according to Hollywood-tracking website boxofficemojo.com.
In second place was The Great Gatsby which made $51 million in its first weekend in theatres. Baz Luhrmann directed the film, based on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novel, and Jay-Z produced the soundtrack.
Pain & Gain, starring Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson and Mark Wahlberg as bodybuilders who turn to kidnapping and extortion, took in $5 million.
